Nature offers vastness or seclusion.
The way I approach nature has gradually changed.
The emphasis is on the experience of nature such as beauty, silence, mystery or vulnerability.
For a long time the emphasis was on space. I primarily painted vast landscapes in oil paint, mixed media and charcoal on paper.
Sky and earth often merged into one another.
In recent years the trees in my work have become important. We learn more and more
about the forests and the underground world of trees with their network of roots and fungi.
Yet forests are increasingly disappearing. Old woods are replaced by 'compensation
forests', all the trees planted in straight lines. This, while humans have a growing need for nature to relaxe
and breathe. Or, as Friedrich Nietszche says:
'We are so fond of being out among nature, because it has no opinion about us.'
Trees are the heart and lungs of the earth.
Although nature has always been central, over the years I have also made excursions related to society.
These works can be seen on the website in the category 'divers'.
In 2025, I curated in France an exhibition at the museum in Bourguignon-lès-Morey (Bourgogne-Franche Comté
featuring an overview of the works I have created regarding nature over the years.
In 2026 I did the same, but now as part of the cultural round in Wageningen (the Netherlands). The jury was impressed
and declared me the winner of the Surprise Prize Cultural Round Wageningen 2026:
'We are surprised by the work of Christine Seghers. Her work made a great impression and lingered in our minds. Her work
shows the vastnes of nature, depicted in a landscape where the space and the influence of the elements are almost
palpable. The oil paintings and the works on paper struck us with their composition, experience of space. of a landscape
you can keep looking at (...)'.
